A fellow hubber inspired to make a hub about smoking. Smoking is a common problem that affects everyone. A smoker’s risk of heart attack is twice that of a nonsmoker. Cigarette smoking is the biggest risk factor for sudden cardiac death. Smokers who have a heart attack are more likely to die and die suddenly (within the hour) than nonsmokers. Evidence now shows that chronic exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of heart disease. Smoking is a woman’s single biggest risk for a heart attack.

Effects of using cigarettes include:

Problems smoking can damage your emotional stability, finances, career, and your ability to build and sustain satisfying relationships. Cigarette abuse has an impact on your family, friends, co workers, and the neighborhood you live in.

Smokers are much more likely to get divorced and have domestic violence issues.

Getting help

Admitting you have a problem is a huge first step. It takes tremendous strength and courage to face your problem head on.

The second step is getting support. Much as you may want to, don’t try to face your problem alone. Changing your habits will be hard, and you’ll need support. Without it, it is easy to rationalize just one more puff, especially since cigarettes are everywhere in our society.

Hi Sincerely25 :0)

I used to smoke and it sure affected my health, but then at the time most of my friends and family did. It eventually killed My dad, a slow painful death.

Sure glad I stopped....

Hey thought you might get a kick out of this...wrote it about a year ago....

How to write a covering letter to apply for a job in a tobacco company? How to include in the letter that working for them is good?

Dear Philip!

Top of the mornin! to ya!

I have been an avid fan of your company for many years.

My family and half the nation of Ireland have been using your products since the British Army checked into our country.

They have been a great source of comfort in times of extreme stress and in many ways have shortened the prison terms of many an Irishman in his lonely English cell.

The social security department loves the early checkout passage they provide for our aging pensioners and the vast amounts of money you have saved the government.

I even have a new product name ready for next seasons marketing drive! We will simply call them "MURPHYS LAW" the Cigarette worth dying for :0)...the undertakers will love it and I have been assured of their full support.

I went through a bout of lung cancer last year and the hospital was delighted to rent me an "Iron lung" and so I will be your first and most devoted "IRONMAN" winner :0) and I don't even have to compete, great advertising potential!

I look forward to the pleasure of meeting you and the showing you our "Family TREE"

Sincerely yours!

PS` that new song you just brought out " You Don`t alwalys die from tobacco, somtimes you just losse a lung" is all the rage in the Irish Pub scene...keep em coming!!! i,m hoarse from singing ;0)

Catch you later..great hub !!!

Hey! Long ago I read this: "Kissing a smoking person is just like licking an ashtray!"

That explains it all. So happy non-smoking era to you all.

Hey back! That is the worse; I really don't even like to be around smoke. Many of the coats in my closet stink.

I used to smoke before. I quit cold turkey as soon as I got the greatest news in my life that I am pregnant. It was an awful habit when i looked back the days when I used to smoke for leisure. It was peer pressure that drove me into taking up the bad habit. It is true when you said that getting a support is a big step to quit smoking. My husband was a big help. Since then i never smoke a single puff.

Great hub to instill awareness towards people about the negative effect of smoking.

I quit cold turkey almost a year ago after smoking for about 8 years, the change is indeed noticeable. I would encourage all smokers to quit.

The propaganda spewed by the tobacco industry is exactly that propaganda. They have tried for years to play down the negative effects of smoking and thankfully eventually failed. The unfortunate turn of events is that they have shifted there attention to a new market.

I am getting away from myself here.....

will definitely vote it up.
